COMPASS – Regional Workshop Explores High-Temperature Geothermal Energy in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands took a significant step toward unlocking their geothermal potential with a Regional Stakeholder Workshop hosted by the COMPASS Geothermal project in collaboration with Greet GEO. Held at the Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias, the hybrid-format event convened 48 participants from across Europe, including geothermal developers, drilling experts, researchers, public authorities, and energy stakeholders.

The workshop focused on the challenges and opportunities of deploying deep and superhot geothermal energy in island environments. It featured technical presentations from COMPASS partners on corrosion mitigation in Enhanced High-Temperature Loop Architecture (EHLA), flexible well completions, and techno-environmental assessments.

A panel discussion brought together leading voices in the sector, including Baldur Hauksson, CTO of Reykjavik Geothermal, and Santiago Díaz Ruano, Head of R&D&I at Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias. Topics ranged from regulatory gaps and energy pricing to community engagement and public acceptance.

Moderated by Amel Barich, Ph.D. (GEORG) and Dario Bonciani (COSVIG), the event emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration and knowledge exchange in accelerating geothermal innovation. The workshop also highlighted the role of regional initiatives like Greet GEO and La Palma Research Centre (LPRC) in supporting sustainable energy transitions.

EIHP Presents GREET GEO Project at Geothermal District Heating & Cooling Days 2025

The EIHP team—Sanja Živković, Hrvoje Dorotić, and Tomislav Đurić—proudly presented the EU-funded GREET GEO Project (I3 – Interregional Innovation Investments) at the Geothermal District Heating & Cooling Days 2025 conference held in Vienna.

During the event, the team introduced the project’s goals and key activities, which center on enhancing interregional cooperation and driving innovation in the use of geothermal energy for sustainable heating and cooling solutions. The conference served as a valuable platform for exchanging knowledge and forging new connections with stakeholders from across the geothermal and broader energy sectors.

We extend our sincere thanks to the organizers for a well-curated programme and engaging discussions that contribute to the advancement of sustainable energy technologies.

GreetGEO Kick-off Meeting in La Palma

The GreetGeo two-day kick-off meeting took place in the island of La Palma from 17th to 18th of December.

We were honored to recieve our consortium formed by: our coordinator Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar, EGEC Geothermal, LEA Pomurje, the Hungarian Geothermal Association, BwB, LPRC – La Palma Research Centre, INOVA – Instituto de Inovação Tecnológica dos Açores, the STRIA South Transdanubian Regional Innovation Agency, and CoSviG.

We were honored to have Nuria Albet-Torres introduce La Palma Renovable and their initiative Energía Bonita, and Lucía Dobarro Delgado from the Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias present the STARRISE_Project, also part of the Interregional Innovation Investment (I3) programme. Their insights were invaluable in setting the stage for our future collaboration.

GreetGEO aims to enhance regional innovation ecosystems, particularly for SMEs in Central Europe and outermost regions, by leveraging geothermal resources. Stay tuned to our social media and our web to keep up with the project updates!
