COMPASS – Regional Workshop Explores High-Temperature Geothermal Energy in the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands took a significant step toward unlocking their geothermal potential with a Regional Stakeholder Workshop hosted by the COMPASS Geothermal project in collaboration with Greet GEO. Held at the Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias, the hybrid-format event convened 48 participants from across Europe, including geothermal developers, drilling experts, researchers, public authorities, and energy stakeholders.
The workshop focused on the challenges and opportunities of deploying deep and superhot geothermal energy in island environments. It featured technical presentations from COMPASS partners on corrosion mitigation in Enhanced High-Temperature Loop Architecture (EHLA), flexible well completions, and techno-environmental assessments.
A panel discussion brought together leading voices in the sector, including Baldur Hauksson, CTO of Reykjavik Geothermal, and Santiago Díaz Ruano, Head of R&D&I at Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias. Topics ranged from regulatory gaps and energy pricing to community engagement and public acceptance.
Moderated by Amel Barich, Ph.D. (GEORG) and Dario Bonciani (COSVIG), the event emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration and knowledge exchange in accelerating geothermal innovation. The workshop also highlighted the role of regional initiatives like Greet GEO and La Palma Research Centre (LPRC) in supporting sustainable energy transitions.
